At about 2 km from the village of Bachevo stands the nature phenomenon of Gergeva or Dzherdzheva Rock. Local people tell that the horse prints visible on the rock even today are those of the horse of St. George. As legend has it, the saint lived here, among the inhabitants of the village. When the Ottoman Turks came, they decided that the only way to force locals to accept the Islam was to kill St. George. A whole army was sent to chase after him but the saint was riding his hero horse and was fast. Suddenly they reached the rock; beneath was the abyss, behind them – the Turkish army. So God gave them wings, the horse flew from the rock and when landed beneath, a mineral spring burst under his legs. The rock split into two. And nowadays, whoever goes there must pass between the two parts. It lets the righteous people through but squeezes the sinners.
