The mosque was erected by the end of the 17th century upon the foundations of the old St. Ilija Church on a hill on the left bank of the river Otinja. It is a rare example in Macedonia, because the mihrab (the niche in the eastern wall of a mosque indicating the direction of Mecca) is located in shallow heptagonal area, which projects from the southeastern facade in the form of an apse, as a result of the inter-relations between Early Ottoman and Byzantine architecture.
